Baby furniture is one of the most popular types of gifts given at a baby shower. Gift shopping for nursery furniture can be made easier if the new parents have a gift registry at some popular stores in your area. However, this is often not the case. Be sure to always enclose a gift receipt with your gift so it can be returned if the new parents get duplicates.
Communication between the guests would be wise to prevent any duplicate gifts. The guests could also choose to get together on something more expensive such as a piece of nursery furniture. The parents need items that will hold up well for their newborn, so check to make certain the item you choose is sturdy and built for safety.
Purchasing an expensive gift such as a piece of furniture for the nursery would help the new parents tremendously as they are probably strapped for cash at this point. What with the pre-natel care and the upcoming hospital and doctor expenses that come with any childbirth.
Baby Cribs
Cribs will be the most important piece of furniture the new parent will need for the baby. They come in a wide variety of styles and finishes to match any nursery theme or color scheme the parents might have for the nursery. They come as standard cribs, canopy, convertible, sleigh and various other types. Some of the more common features available would be adjustable mattress heights, metal mattress supports, one of three different kinds of release mechanism, rolling casters and/or a teething rail. A baby can use the crib from birth until around the age of 3. A safe and sturdy crib will cost from $150 to over $1000 depending on the quality of the wood and the features provided.
Crib Mattresses
A crib mattress is a very important item for the baby as she/he will be spending over 50% of his time on the mattress until he/she is around 3 years of age. Mattresses come in basically two types: foam or innerspring/coil. Foam weighs less while the innerspring/coil will last a much longer time. Accessories include bedding, crib sheets, crib wedges and waterproof mattress pads. High quality foam mattresses will cost between $80 to $100, while an innerspring/coil mattress will cost from $75 to $200.
Bedding-Bumpers-Sheets-Quilts-Shams
Most standard, canopy and convertible cribs will use standard size crib bedding. A round crib, porta crib, cradle and bassinet will all need special bedding to fit the size of the particular item. A bumper is a necessary item that is needed to keep the baby safe by keeping the baby's arms and legs from getting stuck in the slats. A quilt or comforter should not be used in the crib, but rather as a play mat for the baby. A diaper stacker is used to store your diapers and to keep the nursery more organized. Pillows are a safety hazard for the baby and should never be used in the crib. Most bedding sets can cost from $50 to as high as $700 for a set with better quality fabrics etc.
Changing Tables
A changing table should be well padded, have guardrails and include safety straps for the baby. They come in several types such as the combination sytle, dresser drawer and one with open shelves. Accessories include changing pads, oraganizers and wipe warmers. A changing table can be used from birth until about two years of age. They range in price from $90 to $200 depending on the accessories and storage space they have.
Rocking Chairs
A rocking chair would be a welcome addition to the baby nursery or living room. The rocking chair would give the mom-to-be lots of quality time with her newborn baby.
Moses Baskets
Moses baskets are a rather unique piece of furniture. A moses basket would be an unexpected but welcome baby shower gift. Also something the mother could pass on for a heirloom. This is an item that could be passed from generation to generation.
Child's Rocking Chair
A children's rocking chair would make a great gift. One that most people wouldn't think of giving. You wouldn't need to worry about duplicating your gift with some other guest with this gift.
Playpen & Play Yard
Play yards come in 3 different types. The basic which can be used as a playpen or a crib. One that has a bassinet built in for the newborn. A canopy style to keep you infant shielded from the sun and to keep in cooler in the outdoors. Accessories you can purchase seperately include a changing station, netting for outdoor use and sheets. A play yard can be used from birth until about 2 years of age. Good quality play yards cost between $60 to more than $200.
Portable Travel Crib
A portable travel crib would be great for those over-night trips out of town or state to family or friends.
Cradles
A cradle is used from birth until 4 months or the baby is able to roll from side to side. Cradles usually include a padded bumper, fitted sheet and a quilt or comforter. One of the advantages of a cradle is that you can rock it and it is lower than a crib.
Baby Dresser
Every nursery needs a chest of drawers for the newborn. You can buy them with a theme, in different styles, shapes and colors. If you know how the new parents will be decorating the nursery, you can match the baby dresser to the theme.

High Chair
All new parents need this very essential piece of furniture. There are several types of high chairs: Adjustable, conventional, booster and wooden. The high chair should have an adjustable tray, locking mechanism, some kind of restraint system and possibly rolling casters which are allowed to be locked easily. Parents can use the high chair as soon as the baby is born for bottle feeding if it is capable of fully reclining.
Bassinets
A traditional piece of nursery furniture would be a bassinet. The baby can use the bassinet from birth until about 4 month of age. Bassinet sets usually include a hood cover, fitted sheet, plain sheet and a bumper.
Car Seats
A car seat is a necessity because every state requires the baby be restrained while in a car. Newborns must travel in the back seat in a car seat that faces the rear of the car. After the baby is a year old you change to a forward facing car seat. Car seats come in several different types. An infant car seat, convertible and booster seats. Infant and convertible car seats cost between $60 and $300.
Strollers
Strollers come as a standard stroller, single, umbrella, double strooler or as a travel system which is a combination stroller and car seat. Most strollers have a canopy, front bar, harness, reliner and a storage space. Accessories available include accessory bars, attachable toy and activity bars, infant headrests, rain sheilds and stroller connectors for attaching two strollers together. A stroller can be used from around 4 months of age until about 3 or 4 years old. Depending on the style and quality strollers can be purchased for as little as $15 to as much as $1,000.
Baby Monitor
A monitor may be a luxery item, but it can give the parents added reassurance that their baby is safe. There are several types: audio, audio/movement and audio/video monitors. Monitors can be used from newborn to toddler. Depending on the type of monitor, you can buy them for as little as $20 on up to $400, with the audio/video monitor being the most expensive.
Bouncer Seat
A very useful item is a bouncer seat. They can come with an accessory toy bar, canopy, restraint and variable speeds. A bouncer seat can be used from newborn until the baby is 9 months old. The standard non-battery operated bouncer seats cost between $40 and $75 while the battery operated seats tend to cost a bit more.

Customer Review: Awesome!
I am a graduate student who wanted a projector of her own to practice and develop education skills with univerity students, but because I give homeschool english classes to three kids, age 4, 5 and 7, I have also used this one with school children. I have owned it one month.
I had some fears about this projector. You know, mom allways says cheap is allways more expensive later. Not this one. I find this projector just perfect. Extremely lightweight, I can take it to every class with no problem, or from my house to my university in the bus without call the attention. I traveled with this projector to Germany, and had no problem with airport security. A case can be easily found in any electronics store.
I am studying in Spain (Im from USA, but actually studying my grad studies in Spain) and I was offered long time ago a projector as graduation gift. I decided to buy this one from Amazon despite the different electricity in Spain (240v). I had no problem to find a different energy cable for this projector: I just went to a general electronics store, the same were I found the case, and a generic cable fits perfectly to this projector. 327 dollars, the amount that cost this projector, is about 200 euros. The cheaper projector you can find here is 500 euros, and their quality is exactly the same to this one, if you read the specs. The generic cable cost me 4 euros, and the customs fee was about 50 euros, shipping was 20 euros.
I use this projector in very sunny classrooms, and neither any classmate or any of my professors have had problems seeing the screen. Is also very silent, I can give my powerpoint lessons with no problems. In the english classes, the kids love the projector. A projector is an unvaluable education tool for any age and helps a lot when is time to enhance knowledge.
Finally, I have also used this one to see movies in my home. I dont recommend to use this projector with dowloaded movies, because the lower quality of the movie will cause a not so clear image. You can use them, and you will be able to see the movie, but will enjoy the movie as its best if you get the DVD. Its my sincere advise.
I recomend this one with five stars. Unbeteable price, awesome quality, perfect portability. You can't ask more. The only thing you will need is go to a sunglasses store and buy a sunglasses cleaning cloth to clean the black top of projector with any risk of scratching it. I hate seeing my fingermarks there so I clean it every time I mark it.
Customer Review: The little projector that could.
If you're reading this while searching through page after page of digital projectors, wondering if you should take the plunge - then look no further.
The viewsonicpj503dp is a great place to stop looking. I was taken aback by the value and the quality of this product. I was looking for something multi-functional, as I have young children who watch movies tirelessly, I am a big video game fanatic and my living enviornment doesnt consist of alot of big open space. The flexibility and overall final product this projector delivers at its listed price, might have you shaking your head in disbelief at the price of some of those "top of the line" big screen TVs.
Want a bright picture ? 1500 Lumens. Which means to the layman that even in a room that has a few lights on, the picture this item delivers is very bright. Want a big screen experience ? At 19.4 feet this sucker throws a 150 inch viewable screen. Want the high-def feel ? 720p. Which is what people's hdtv recievers broadcast at for their hd televisions.
In addition to this, it has VGA input (computers and videogames), rca input (the yellow of the three red/white/yellow cords)and s-video input (high def recievers and dvd players). It doesnt even weigh five pounds, it's smaller than your cable box and after rebate it's not even four hundred bucks.
Still not convinced ? Viewsonic packs it with a two-year warranty, and a bulb that will last a whopping 2-3 THOUSAND hours if you run it in economy mode(which looks NO different than reguler mode if your wondering). With the cost of replacement bulbs in other machines reaching into the hundreds, a bulb that costs around sixty bucks and lasts that long is nothing to laugh at.
It doesnt have all the bells and whistles its higher priced brothers do, but who cares ! It's CHEAP. It's FLEXIBLE. It is a great bargain and I encourage you if you've read on this far to take my word for it and make this purchase. Oh, and if you're looking - I have been to about eight of Amazon's competitor sites to see if I could get it a few bucks cheaper and you can't. Amazon sells it twenty five bucks cheaper than everyone else.
Enjoy !

Sanus Systems VMAA18B Universal Articulating Mount with Extended Reach for 30" to 50" Displays (Black)
Sanus Systems VMAA18B Universal Articulating Mount with Extended Reach for 30" to 50" Displays (Black)
Full-motion wall mount for large flat-panel TVs with 19.5" extension. Allows ?6? lateral roll to ensure TV is perfectly level after hanging.
Customer Review: Nice mount, Great customer service
I purchased the Sanus VMAA18B (black) for a 46" Sony Bravia LCD. I picked the VMAA18B because it is not as bulky as other mounts (31 lbs), is easy to move/tilt and had a low profile when collapsed.
Another review recommended against this mount with a Sony 46", but I decided to purchase after trading emails with Sanus technical support (very helpful), who recommended I purchase 2 M6 metric bolts (6 x 20mm) since 2 of the included M6 bolts (6 x 35mm) used to mount brackets on the back of the Sony Bravia were too long.
I mounted directly on brick - had to purchase anchors (Red Head 3/8 dia x 3" hex sleeve anchor) since lag bolts included with the mount are only recommended for wooded studs. Installation took ~4 hours, mainly due to time to measure best location & drill the 8 holes (4 top, 4 bottom) into solid brick. Some of the instructions weren't clear, but eventually figured out what to do.
Sanus technical support was great. I received prompt & informative answers to all of my questions -- was even recommended to get advice from a local contruction professional due to variable nature of brick.
Overall, the mount looks great, is a great full motion mount for the price.
Customer Review: It does work with TH50PZ750U! Great Product/Price/Service
I own a PANASONIC TH50PZ750U and the SANUS VMAA18 works amazing with this tv. It was very simple to install, less than an hour with 2 people. Here are some helpful hints to mount the 750U. The Panasonic screen is compatible with the VMAA18 in that the mounting pattern on the back and the weight of the screen are within the specifications for the mount. I believe what many heard could be related to the length of the bolts needed for installation. They include four diameters of bolts, each in two lengths, for attaching the screen to the mount. The Panasonic mounting holes accept the largest diameter, or Metric 8mm diameter bolt. This means that even the longest length of M8 bolt that they send, which is 40mm, doesn't sufficiently engage. In that case, an M8 bolt in a 60mm length is required. Metric 8mm diameter bolts come in two thread pitches. You want a coarse pitch of 1.25. The best places to find these are smaller hardware stores or automotive parts stores. I picked up some up for about a dollar.
One other consideration for this screen would be the large bulge on the bottom. The screen is mounted using two vertical monitor brackets. To ensure proper fit, you may need to position these brackets (which have slots along the full length for flexible mounting) as far up on the back of the screen as possible. You may also need to use the included spacers between the monitor brackets and the back of screen as well.
This is a fantastic mount, and provides the sleekest appearance of any full motion mount out there and yet still has full functionality.

Making Japanese-Style Lamps and Lanterns
Making Japanese-Style Lamps and Lanterns
Nothing is quite as beautiful as the Japanese lamp or lantern. Edward Turner gives both novice and experienced woodworkers the ability to create remarkable lighting devices including bedside, overhead, freestanding, and outdoor lamps. All designs come with detailed instructions and rich color photographs. Projects are rated, with something for every level of ability.
Customer Review: Japanese lantern
This book is full of beautiful projects, but beware. It is also full of errors and inconsistencies. Be sure to read the instructions fully to make sure everything makes sense and that instructions at different points agree. Example: on one project it tells you to use half inch wood, but the assembly instructions call for 3/4 inch wood. In another place a drawing shows a part to be 8 inches, but when you extrapolate it makes the project 7 feet wide.
I expect to build several projects, but I now know to proceed with caution.
Customer Review: Get Lit
This is a beautiful looking book describing some wonderfully nice looking and creatively constructed lamps. The photographs of the lamps are high quality, and the book is like the works illustrated, clean and simple in presentation. I was going to give it 4 stars based on a gut feeling, but felt I was stretching to find something negative, thus I've given it the benefit of the doubt. I can see that others note where some measurements are off in places, but the presentation and style and beauty of the final product made me go for the higher rating in the end. Just be wary during construction, you will be fine.
The 18 designs are amply distributed around various types and themes. You will need a reasonably well equipped workshop to complete many of them or a willingness to work the wood in various ways otherwise (including the optional use of Japanese hand tools). I bought the book mostly for inspiration as to ideas for my own lamps, and as to that, the book fit the bill fine. One could extrapolate the designs in this book and enlarge them to make some really wild house/room lighting. So if you lean toward this kind of style, you will probably find this book to your liking. You must follow the guidelines for lamp distance and temperatures if using the paper approach here. I'd consider substituting an approppriate plastic or glass where possible, and when it wouldn't impact the artistic presentation of the lamp.
All in all, when considering the content and potential for reward even if building only one, you will find that this book is likely going to represent money well spent. I look forward to any sequel.
